Hussain makes history with first goal of Sixways era.

Worcester Raiders kicked-off their new era at Sixways with a 1-1 draw against Midlands Football League side Tividale.

Zaq Hussain put his name in the record books on 17 minutes, slotting home Raiders’ first ever goal at Sixways from 12 yards out following a mix up in the visitors’ defence.

However, Tividale were back on level terms 10 minutes into the second half courtesy of Curtis Cocking, his curling effort from the left-hand side of the edge of the box giving Raiders keeper Matt Gwynne no chance.

The contest was played at a frantic pace, Raiders fans undoubtedly relishing the prospect of the day they can flock through the turnstiles at Sixways when plans are in place.

Raiders created the first opening as early as the sixth minute when centre back Sam Carey attempted to unhinge Dale’s defence with a slide rule pass looking for the pace of striker Rich Smith, but the ball carried through to the keeper.

Two minutes later, Raiders were let off the hook when an in-swinging corner went across the face of their goal with no Dale attackers on hand to apply the finish. This spurred Raiders into action and they began to exert significant pressure on Dale’s goal, with Hussain presented with a golden chance to open up his account only for his touch let him down as the keeper bared down on him.

Hussain made amends moments later, the skilful attacker showing composure from close range to give Raiders the lead and the first for the club at Sixways. With half-time looming, Raiders went in search of a second goal and on 41 minutes midfielder James Baldwin intercepted on halfway before driving at the heart of Dale’s defence and unleashing a powerful curling effort which was tipped wide by the impressive keeper.

The visitors took the initiative in the early exchanges of the second half and levelled the score through Cocking’s rasping shot on 55 minutes. Dale then went in search of a quickfire double, with Raiders talisman Jordan Stoddart coming to the rescue with a clearance off the line as shot-stopper Gwynne collided with an opponent.

Ash Parsons came on for the latter stages of the second period and looked lively on the right-hand side of Raiders’ attack as he fired inches wide of the far post on 74 minutes. Five minutes later striker Kyonn Evans found space on the edge of the area and got a shot away only for his effort to go straight down the throat of the keeper.

Raiders had the chance to win the game in stoppage time, Evans shrugging off his marker to go clean through, but his effort was parried away, and the referee blew for full-time.
